Defrosting Your Fridge: When you know you are going to defrost the fridge, start to
let your food supplies run down. Once your fridge is empty, unplug and place old towels and newspapers on the floor, to catch the defrosting ice. Place a basin of boiling water into the freezer and let the steam from the water melt the ice. You can speed up the process by re-placing the basin of boiling water on a regular basis. Do not try and break off any ice particles as this can damage the fridge. Just let it melt. Butter knives and screw drivers are not freezer friendly and will always puncture the freon lines. If this happens, you will be charged for the replacement cost of the fridge.
Once the fridge is fully defrosted, wash the inside, shelves and doors fully. Plug your fridge back in.
It should be noted that the freezer door will break if you do not defrost your fridge
regularly. Do not allow a build up of ice to occur. If you do break your freezer door you will have to pay the replacement costs.
Typically refrigerators have trays and ducts to collect the melted water and it collects in the tray under the freezer. Empty it as it fills during the defrosting process.
Can we defrost while the fridge is fully loaded? Would the food get affected?
Yes. Defrosting can be performed even if there are contents inside the fridge. Just make sure that it is not for a long duration as the food might spoil.
It is recommended to defrost the fridge once a week. If done regularly we not only prevent the build up of ice, but also maximize the cooling process.
What are the problems if we do not defrost?
1. The ice formed will reduce the overall efficiency and cooling of the refrigerator.
2. Items inside the refrigerator will stick to each other.
3. If there is a power failure, the built up ice will melt and mess up the interior.
4. Food will spoil and also cause the interiors to smell.

Over a period of time, due
to constant opening of the
fridge door, a build-up of
frost around the freezer
occurs.
There is no avoiding frost in a normal refrigerator. The only option is to regularly defrost the equipment.
